Richard Thornwell Dunlap

Richard Thornwell (Dick) Dunlap passed away on December 5, 2025, at age 97. He lived at 2102 East Blvd, Wilmington Island, GA.

Dick was born in Wyandotte, Michigan and grew up during the Depression. He enlisted in the Navy in early 1945 on his 17th birthday. However, the war ended that summer just before his squadron was scheduled to ship out to the Pacific. He was honorably discharged a year later.

He was a journalism graduate of the University of South Carolina, after attending the Opportunity School in Columbia, where he met his future wife, Dorothy.

He worked for many years for DuPont in Camden, SC, where he published an employee newspaper and managed their recreation and community outreach programs.

In 1990, Dick and Dorothy moved to Wilmington Island, GA. His interests in retirement included reading, golf, crossword puzzles and college football.

Richard is survived by two brothers: Robert in Myrtle Beach, SC, and Donald in Frederick, MD; a daughter, Melissa (David) Dupree in Wilmington Island, GA, and two sons: Richard (Beth Moore) in Landrum, SC and James (Deborah) in Hockessin, DE. He also has six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, and a son, John.

Arrangements are being made for a family memorial service early next year.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Old Savannah City Mission, Hospice Savannah Inc, or a charity of your choice.
